Broadway these days

So Broadway's changed, we all know that.  Its mostly blockbuster musicals for the tourists or star vehicles or the tried and true.  But here's something, and I don't know if there is any meaning to this.  I happen to know two relatively young directors, new to broadway, Pam MacKinnon has just opened her second production and Sam Gold is soon to make his debut.  The plays?  Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Picnic respectively.  Woolf is having its forth go around (1964, '76, '05 and now) and Picnic its third (1953, '94, and coming in 2013).  What's the headline?  New American Writers Left For Dead?  Up-and-Commers Cut Teeth on Old Leather? Producers Hold Cards Close To Vest, Just In Front Of Pacemakers? Or is it just Broadway these days?

Oct / Nov thoughts.

Nov. 30th

This weeks note to Mitch McConnell

"Again, you are a carbuncle on the ass of the body politic. Pass the senate rule changes.

Yours..."

Nov. 22nd

Thyme biscuits with honey-thyme butter
Apricot-glazed green beans
Mashed sweet potatoes with rosemary walnuts
Orange-cranberry relish
Sausage (soy italian style) and herb stuffing

We are full of thanks.

Apparently when you move to the parts of Brooklyn dominated by hipsters, affluent breeders and slopeans you must drink a kind of cool aid designed to numb parts of the frontal cortex associated with common sense. One of the many results is that you can often forget final consonants, like the 'd' at the end of superfund, so opening restaurants and shops and raising children in charming reclaimed housing on the shores of the Gowanus Canal becomes 'super-fun' not idiotic.

Nov. 7th

Whew! Now everyone has to promise me one thing. That you will write to your congressional blowhard of choice EVERY WEEK and let them know what you think. This week, and for the near future I will be focusing on that career politician I hold responsible for much of the gridlock. That white fossil Kentucky keeps sending to DC, good ole Mitch McConnell. This weeks post to his website;

"Hello,

Your statement post election sucked. You must recalibrate your recalcitrant ways and engage your old white self in working to form passable legislation. History is already poised to throw your legacy on the dustbin labeled "those in the way of progress". Get busy, get it done, or get out of the way.

To glimpse into the future play with http://flood.firetree.net/

Keep in mind a median value of plus 4 meters is the projected sea level rise in the next 80 years. My laundry list for NYC.
• Sea walls to protect Kennedy and LaGuardia Airports
• Dyke walls to protect Wall street area in Manhattan and Newark Airport.
• 25 to 50 year plan to cede all barrier islands (Far Rockaways, Long Beach, Jones Beach)
• 25 to 50 Year plan to cede large parts of Astoria, Long Island City, Greenpoint, Red Hook, The Gowanus Canal and the Brooklyn Docks.
• 50 to 100 year plan to relocate sections of Belt Parkway and cede entire neighborhoods along the Brooklyn / Long Island south shore. (Coney Island, Manhattan Beech, Howard Beach, Island Park, Ocean Park, and on into the Hamptons)
I'm afraid sticking our collective heads in the sand is not working. Use the map to see the effects on your neighborhood. Plan for the worst, hope for the best.

Oct 30th

The day after hurricane Sandy battered the east coast Romney is about to commence a "Disaster Relief" campaign in Ohio. I asked my girlfriend if she'd heard of a disaster in Ohio. "Yes" she replied, "they're undecided!"

Oct 29th

I can hear it now..."Hurricane Sandy Nothing More Than A Left Wing Conspiracy Designed By The Media And Other Socialists To Divert Attention From The Presidential Race And Focus Spotlight On The Real Commander In Chief"...saw right through it didn't they. Oh and btw, global warming is a myth.

In response to David Axelrod's "Dennis I'll be blunt" email. I'm sure it will cross his desk.

"David, I'll be blunt.

Your guy lost the presidency by not showing up for the debate. There is a SLIM chance he can turn the tables over the next 3 weeks but the smart money says the damage is done. Your only hope is to stay on one message and one message only.

The guy can't be trusted.

Don't pitter pat. Don't get into the weeds. Don't argue his policies.

The guy cannot be trusted. He'll say anything to get elected and then what!?

You don't need more money. You need to get your guy to focus on what I've just laid out or you don't have a prayer.

Best of luck,
D.
